Today, the European Commission released an update on the Common Fisheries Policy it has applied over the past few years. The report included data on fish stocks as well as proposed action for the future, such as quota limits on fishing.
The report highlighted the fact that fish stock numbers are slowly improving, but that missing data due to inadequate reporting did occur. The new fishing method proposed, derived from “Maximum Sustainable Yield ”, includes phasing out overfishing and encouraging better data collection from Member States.
Overall, the goals of the new method hope to lower the impact of fishing on the environment, cause less damage to the ocean and marine life, and reduce carbon emissions and fuel expenditures.
