Back To School Green Tips…Classroom Edition

Aug 30 2011

Heading back to school is always a big deal for students. Children always want cool new stuff to show off to their friends. One thing parents must be conscious of is what they are buying. While it is important to stay up to date with certain things, there is always room to re-use everyday items we have around the house.

When preparing to shop for school supplies, start off by taking inventory of items you already have. While a new set of markers with a couple new colors is awesome, it is probably not be necessary. Here you may have to bust out some sophisticated psychological tactics in order to get your kids on board, but its definitely worth it. For example, you can appeal to them by offering to buy them something new and trendy, like a backpack made from recycled material, as long as they don’t fuss over the markers.

Next, when shopping, make sure you don’t overbuy. Make a list of the items your child NEEDS, not wants. Stick to the list and you can walk out of the store with more money in your pocket.

Lastly, remember that green products for everything are available almost everywhere nowadays. Purchase green backpacks, binders, notebooks, pens and pencils, rulers etc. to help the environment and show your child a great example of being eco-conscious. Many of these eco-friendly products have been designed to appeal to kids and therefore should not be a hard sell!
