Iceland Exports Whale Meat to Japan

July 21st, 2011

Since 2006 Iceland’s annual fin whale catch has “risen to about 150 per year, with most meat exported to Japan.”  After a formal statement by Secretary Gary Lock regarding the global endangerment of fin whales caused by Iceland’s hunt, President Obama “has sixty days for a response,” one that will likely include trade bans.

Iceland’s Fisheries Minister, Jon Bjarnason, was surprised by the U.S.; stating that Icelandic whaling is “based on sound science” and is sustainable.  However there is still concern about “Iceland’s disregard for the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) global moratorium on commercial whaling.”

Secretary Locke has also commented, saying that Iceland’s “harvest of whales and export of fin whale meat threaten an endangered species and undermine worldwide efforts to protect whales.”

Senator Whitehouse Gives Senate Speech on Health of the Oceans

July 19th, 2011

As previously reported on World Oceans Day, June 21, 2011, by Sea•thos,  the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) released their “Implementing the Global State of the Ocean Report“.

On July 13, 2011, Senator Whitehouse (D-RI) gave a speech on the Senate Floor about the report. The Senator emphasized the state of our unhealthy oceans and how marine life is in peril due mostly to human action around the world.

The Representative discussed ocean stresses, such as overfishing and pollution as well as issues like photdegradation and acidification. He highlighted the current threats of mass extinction and eco-system collapse that are possible within a single generation.

Sea•thos would like to commend this effort by Senator Whitehouse. The world must work together to preserve and protect our ocean, the largest eco-system on Earth.

Please feel free to view the Press Release from this speech and the Video as well.
