Chandipur-on-sea is located on the Bay of Bengal in the eastern Indian state of Orissa. This sea-side resort, lined with casuarina trees, is said to have one of the most beautiful beaches in the area and is often referred to as ‘the land of hidden treasures’. Most who visit the beach, however, don’t go for its beauty but rather for the magic trick the sea plays!
What makes this beach truly distinct is the fact that twice a day the sea pulls a Houdini and disappears! At low tide the sea waves ‘adios’ and recedes about 3 miles! The vanishing ocean leaves the seafloor exposed, providing people with the unique opportunity to explore the seabed, complete with a variety of shells, starfish, driftwood and little horseshoe crabs.
Chandipur is also known as the location for the Indian Army’s Integrated Test Range (ITR). To date there have been a number of missiles successfully launched from the area.
