U.S. Open of Surfing Goes Green

August 4th, 2011

Every year, thousands of sport, music, and art enthusiasts gather at Huntington Beach to celebrate the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing.  This year, the weeklong event will take some new eco-friendly initiatives to educate and inspire attendees to take action in environmental programs such as beach clean-up, recycling, and clean water initiatives.

The event, sponsored by Nike, Hurley, and Converse, recognizes that with a crowd of over 500,000 people expected, plastic litter on the beach poses a serious problem.  An on-site recycling store called TRASHed will give out tokens for recycled items that can be redeemed for merchandise and prize packages.

Make sure to bring your Neerg reusable bottle because the Hurley 20 Program will feature a watering station where clean water is free for everyone!  The Open ends the first weekend of August with performances by MGMT and Surfer Blood, so enjoy the festivities while you can!

Give the Ocean a Voice

May 4th, 2011

Congressman Sam Farr introduced legislation, H.R.1171, that would reauthorize and amend the Marine Debris Research, Prevention, and Reduction Act of 2006, which established the NOAA Marine Debris Program. The Reauthorization would amend the existing program to address the adverse effects of marine debris on marine ecosystems, coastal economies, and navigation safety through source identification, prevention, removal, and monitoring efforts. The bill would also streamline the program to avoid any overlaps or conflicts with other Federal agencies conducting marine debris activities. Sea•thos Foundation is proud to support this and give the ocean a voice!
