In the June issue of SELF magazine, the article “Full Nets, Empty Oceans” outlines the basics of overfishing and the global issue of unsustainable ocean use. The SELF story focuses on Alaska, and how they have managed to keep their fish stock relatively stable through the use of extremely strict fishing regulations at the local, state and federal level. Some healthy and ocean-friendly advice from the magazine includes eating fish lower on the food chain, checking for Marine Stewardship council approval ratings, and adding supplements to your diet. The column also recommends downloading the Project FishMap app, that lets iPhone and Android users search for restaurants and grocery stores that sell sustainable seafood.
